As the Assistant Director for Leadership Development, Doug Baer helps students discover who they are and how finding their passions can transform their lives. As a leadership professional and educator, leading by example is critically important to Doug. Integrity, positive team dynamics, and maintaining momentum towards achieving a shared vision are vital components of Dougs leadership style. With over fifteen years experience in higher education, Doug worked with student scholars to develop the skills to become citizen leaders. You can see some of his work in three award-winning documentaries about promoting student leadership development through cross-cultural experiences. Doug is a certified Clifton Strengths coach, specializing in group and team dynamics. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Truman State University in Missouri and a Master in College Student Personnel Administration from the University of Central Missouri.
Mikala Harvey is a Graduate Assistant who works with students participating in various education and experiential programs within the Leadership Development office. Mikala oversees the Student Educator Leaders and Student Leader Consultant programs and was co-chair of the annual conference, the Appalachian Leadership Forum. Mikala also manages the Involvement Assistants who are the operations staff of the McCaskey Center in the student union. Mikala believes that anyone has the ability to become a leader. By facilitating activities, learning opportunities and engaging in meaningful reflection, Mikala helps the students to realize their unique skills and capacity to lead. Mikala received her Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies from Emporia State University, Kansas. She will complete her Master of Arts in Student Affairs Administration in Spring 2019.
Jesse Vinson is a Graduate Assistant for Leadership Development who works with Student Educator Leaders and Service and Leadership Residential Learning Community programs, as well as facilitates leadership coaching sessions with groups on campus. She was instrumental in planning and executing an annual conference, Appalachian Leadership Forum. Jesse enjoys working with students and watching them develop personally and professionally while they become passionate leaders. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Recreation Management from Appalachian State and is currently pursuing her Master of Arts in Student Affairs Administration.
