Are you looking to develop your leadership capacity?
Do you value creating change in local, national, and global communities?
Then the Leadership in Action RLC is for you!
The Leadership in Action (LIA) Residential Learning Community is designed for 22 first-year students of all majors. Located in Cone Hall, members of the LIA RLC engage in academic and experiential leadership learning to create positive, sustainable change in their communities.
The LIA RLC is led by the Leadership Education & Development (LEAD) office with support from the Appalachian and Community Together (ACT) office.
- Residential Component: In fall and spring semesters, LIA students live together on the same floor of Cone Hall, participating in Residential Life events and engaging in conversations about leadership and social action.
- Academic Component: In the fall semester, LIA students enroll in UCO 1200: First Year Seminar with a special focus on leadership development. This course integrates community visits and other out-of-class experiences to help LIA students feel at home at Appalachian State and in Boone.
- Experiential Component: In the spring semester, LIA students apply their leadership learning from fall semester to an experiential learning project of their choice. This project can involve sustained volunteer engagement with a community partner through the ACT office, enrollment in a Leadership Studies course, a reflective portfolio for a current leadership role, and more.
