Dr. Jim Street

Senior Associate Director for Leadership Development
Director for the Minor in Leadership Studies

Jim directs Leadership Development, including the academic minor in Leadership Studies, and is a part of the leadership team for the Department of Student Engagement & Leadership, under which Leadership Development is housed.

Dr. Jim Street is the Senior Associate Director of Leadership Development, as well as the Director of the Minor in Leadership Studies and teaches leadership courses. He also coordinates the leadership coaching program, the LeaderShape Institute, and works with the Service and Leadership Floor. Dr. Street has been at Appalachian since 1991 and has at some point worked with various Campus Activities and Leadership Development programs: from advising fraternities and sororities to coordinating Emerging Leaders to advising Club Council. Jim’s intention was to work at ASU for 4-5 years, but Boone, NC and Appalachian are special places that keep him connected to the High Country. He believes that all students have the capacity to engage in the process of leadership, and the purpose of involvement is to give students the opportunity to find out how they can best engage to create positive change. His personal civic engagement includes being a member and past-president of the Boone Sunrise Rotary, being a member and past-chair of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Red Cross and assisting non-profit organizations with organizational and leadership development.

Kim Mitchell

Associate Director
Associate Director for Leadership Development

Kim is a two-time graduate of Appalachian State University, and she believes that getting involved on campus makes all the difference. She loves living in the mountains, being outside, taking walks, cooking and reading. Her perfect night would consist of sitting around a campfire with friends. Kim's job allows her to meet and learn about new people each day, which is perfect because she believes random conversations are a reason to get up every day.
